This week's column won't have your usual recaps, stories, and other highlights. Instead, I'll talk a little bit about what happened during the last game of the night. Of course, by now most of you have heard already about what happened to Dennis. For those who didn't watch the game, you missed a good one. You had two teams that both had a squad full of players that know how to play the game at a high level. The entire game was played really smoothly without many turnovers or reckless play. Dennis was having a great all-around game (Can I get a double-double with cheese? as Col would say) as he was working out hard out there in the post and grabbing every loose rebound. In keeping with his all-out hustle, he was injured when he was trying to prevent a fast break by blocking a layup attempt at full speed.
Watching the scene afterwards was a concerning one but at the same time, one of encouragement. Dennis was in good spirits while the medical team was there to attend to him. Most people stuck around to support Dennis and his friends were making arrangements to be sure everything was taken care of for him.
Many of our lives are lived in the same way this game played out. We try and achieve the best in life by getting a good education, well-paying job, great family, and having supportive friends. But sometimes, life throws a curveball and we are faced with some adversity. Each of us deals with adversity differently but adversity is no accident. It serves a purpose and is much like our life, which is no accident (as we learned last week in our devotions). Through each step of the way during these times, God is with us. He is our motivator on the sidelines, our comforter in pain, and our support when we are helpless. Hopefully, this will help all of us to appreciate our abilities that God has given and the privilege that each of us has every time we're able to step on the court and play the game we enjoy.
I have no doubt that Dennis will be back on his feet in no time. I even hear rumors that he's ready to return to the court next week!
