Col’s Power Rankings, Week 4

A brand new league...almost. But the chipper is there for the taking.

#1 - Grey (1)

There’s no such thing as a jinx. Rhymes with Rob was just making the game interesting, spicing up the match up a little. Just not for the grey team.

I missed the first half because we were having devos, but when I saw the score with about 13 minutes left I was a little surprised. But I really thought Octavio’s well motivated guys would pull-off a comeback. They scored a bunch of points from a press (A press?! Who does that in a friendship league?!) And down the wire, the white team was down to one timeout with zero momentum (Kwoker was even telling his team they had none just to make sure they didn’t rely on it. I’m sure he told them later). Hank was getting to the line almost EVERY time he touched the ball and Stan was finally racking up the famed steals I kept talking about. But alas, time ran out.

Well, at least Jimmy and Hua are still shooting lights out. Have you noticed that between the two, only two free throws have been attempted? It’s not too important, but maybe something to note if you’re playing them and it’s late in the game. Hey Hubie, I’m ordering a single-double, just to get you out of your funk.

They’re 2-1, tied with two other teams for tops in the league, meaning these next two games will be really important.

#2 - Red (4)

It must be nice to have a bench that can score. People came in, grabbed boards, scored some points and checked out until they were summoned again. All around, they handled their offensive possessions much better than the other team. They’d swing the ball, looking for the good, better or best shots (read: passed to RY and Drew), grabbed a whole mess of boards and did it all over again.

By the way, thanks to Rich and Lil’ Jon for scoring your first points of the League at the expense of...

#3 - Blue (2)

Here’s an actual conversation we had during our first time-out of the second half. "We have 8 minutes to make a run, take a lead and protect it." 8 minutes later, Ryan proceeds to check into the game and scores at will. Its not as if he scored most of his team’s points either. We were so focused on helping out on Ry (which never happened, but we talked about it), other people got open and found some easy points or rebounds.

Ray Zansky, where are you? He told me himself that he’d be there last week, but the weather got the better of him. I’m not making this person up, he does exist, I met him at the Skills Comp before the lights went out. Really, he’ll show up sooner or later. But Eugene came through and hooked us up with a one man bench to call upon when needed. And we needed it. The rest of the season is not looking too hot for us, as we’re playing the greys and the George Masons, coming off their upset win.

#4 - Redish-yellow (5)

This was a really tough call, as both black and trendy orange have similar types of remaining schedules. They both have to play red.

But only one has to play grey. And the other is/was determined to get their first win.

Sherman was a little pickier about his shots against Brian’s team, keeping everything from inside the arc. Less 3s was pretty key in this game, as it allowed for Jeff, JJ and Greg to rebound more effectively. The killer front court is finally playing up there billing. With them in sync, it should allow for Arnold, Brian and Chester to be fed from all those boards. Just remember, keep the shots within the 3 line.

If they can win their last two games while blue and black upset grey, we could have a crazy bracket busting tie for third, second, maybe even first. The League championship is still up for grabs. Also up for grabs is the award for best player named Sherman. The two battle it out on week 7.

#5 - Black (3)

I’m sure they missed Brandon. His presence would have more evenly matched them up with Greg’s team. That’s two games in a row that things haven’t gone their way.

But just like the Orange, if they can pull of two wins, they’re still in contention to place well in the League. Hope is not lost. My faith in the team is still there, it’s just getting harder and harder to rank only 6 teams.

#6 - White (6)

The ‘coalition-for-playing-less-to-make-the-other-guys-on-the-Cornerstone-team-feel-bad-for-playing-too-much’ was secretly formed sometime in between the Skill Comp and week 4 with Brian and Jon heading up the thing. However, it’s not going to work, on me or Greg or anyone else.  But this does mean that the Kwocker is more efficient than Ry now, clocking in a total of zero minutes to secure the win. Impressive indeed my friend.

I’d include Brian too, but he doesn’t have any stats. Suit up, dish out some dimes, then we’ll talk.

There’s the obvious with Rom and Sherm scoring a butt-load and being ridiculously accurate at the charity stripe. Then there’s the finer print. Everyone got a rebound, everyone. This is a mighty important stat for team white for they only had 2 steals total! They definitely out-slowed them boys on grey.
