Week 4 recaps
Well, it took 3 games but now every team has a win under their belt. Even my team when some people, who shall remain nameless but their name rhymes with Bob, thought we would go winless. More on that later...
Team Orange- 49
Team Black- 36
This looked like a SF Giants game with all the black and orange out there. Finally, team orange played liked the #1 preseason ranking that I gave them and got their first win of the season. Of course, this required Greg to start the game and play 37 minutes and 16 seconds of the game out of 40 minutes (using Col-daddy's official stat/time tracker). I guess being winless is a cause for desperate measures. But Greg was effective by getting a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds along with 4 steals. The whole team played their best game of the season with taking smart shots and playing tough defense. Adam wasn't able to get on track as he battled with defensive stopper "Bruce Bryant" JJ and Jeff. Jeff had a nice all-around game with 12 points, 6 boards, 3 assists, and 2 steals while JJ put on some nice low post moves. Eric was able to keep team black close with 11 points but wasn't getting enough support as no one else was in double figures. Sherman was able to seal up the game by making his uncanny drives to the basket. But Greg's 39 minutes and 42 seconds was the key in ensuring his team would get the victory.
Team Red- 56
Team Blue- 45
Watching the first half of this game, you could tell that team red was on their game. Team blue was missing the inside presence of Dennis along with their point-guard Mike so the burden fell on Col-daddy and Tim's shoulders to carry the team. It looks like they responded with 16 points a piece along with Donald doing his best Charles Barkley impression by grabbing 11 boards. But this was not enough to offset 75% shooting by Ryan and 100% (yes 100%) by Andrew. Ryan was his usual efficient self by playing 15 minutes and 37 seconds of the game and nearly scoring 1 point per minute along with 4 steals. Drew had a nice stat line with 11 points, 6 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal and a block. Rich also had a good game by grabbing 7 boards and scoring 8 points. I guess all the small guys decided to crash the boards this game. Ringer #2 Eugene played his first game of the season but was a non-factor as he was rounding back into playing shape.
Team White- 53
Team Grey- 48
Before the game, this nameless person (rhymes with job) compared this matchup with a #1 vs. #16 in the NCAA tournament. So basically we were ranked #16 out of 6 teams (is that even possible?!?) and were given no chance because no #16 seed has never beaten a #1 seed in the NCAA tournament. So, our team came out fired-up and took a quick lead with Mel and Sherman getting baskets down low. Mel even surprised a few people with a couple 20-foot jumpers. But the key would be to contain the dynamic duo of Stan and Hank. We knew we couldn't stop them from scoring so we just tried to contain them as much as possible. But helping out on defense with these guys meant opening up shots for others like Jim who continued his hot shooting by scoring 8 points. It seemed like everyone was fired-up for this game with JC grabbing 10 boards and putting on post moves that I haven't seen since high school. Even Ray got into the mix by sneaking in amongst the trees and grabbing a couple boards. Midway through the 2nd half, our team got fatigued and Octavio "Phil Jackson" decided to press us which lead to some easy buckets for Stan (5 steals) and Hank, and offensive rebounds for the rebounding machine that is Ivan. The lead was down to 1 but we re-grouped and went back to the basics of pounding it down low with Mel and Sherman. They finished with 17 and 19 points respectively with Sherman icing the game by going 8-8 from the line. Stan and Hank still got theirs with 13 and 15 points.
Just call us George Mason...
Player of the Week:
Sherman Lee 19 points 4/8 2pts, 8/8 FTs, 4 rebounds, 1 steal
