Ryan and Oz will be providing color commentary for the duration of the league. They’ll provide the main course, and that means I get to fill in everything else. So…
It’s always fun to make up lists, especially if they’re sports lists. Being only the preseason, there are way too many unknown variables that will contribute to a team’s success. So instead of a “Top 10…” or “Best of…” this will be a teaser and we’ll simply call it …
10 things for 2010
Consider this to be more of the special features section complimenting the main DVD/Blu-ray.
1. This is the most people we’ve ever had participating. All 6 teams have a decent rotation making for a much deeper bench. It’s always been tough to manage the playing time. The captains converse a lot about, “Do we coach, simply to win?”, “Do we make substitutions just to make sure everyone has equal playing time?”, “How do I coach so that everybody has fun and team morale stays high?” Part of this year’s team sharing times are inspired by these dilemmas. What would you do as a coach?
2. This is probably one of THE most colorful years in terms of team color combinations. Usually, there are the standard colorways of red, blue, green, yellow, white and black. Now we’ve got cardinal red, coral blue, purple (PURPLE!), kelly green (for the Celtic fans), a black and orange combo (for the SF Giant’s fans), to go along with trusty white. For $35, you get two meals, 2-3 refs per game, stat tracking, new friends AND fashion forward tees. Yes, we care.
3. That cardinal red team looks seriously deep. And really tall. One of their captains didn’t even play the entire night and they still look really solid. Watching them play made me think of Lowell and Stanford, only one of which Robert likes.
4. The kelly green team (Let’s call them the “Kelly’s”) only had 3 mates come out to play. But beware when they are at full strength. Ryan hasn’t played for a little while, but trust me, he’s instant offense. And they have 2 members of last years 3 on 3 champs, Jeff and Erik. I’m not sure how it happens, but from year to year and team will compromise mostly of veterans (read: average age is > 30). Check out the Spurs and Lakers, wily vets know how to close out games. The Kelly’s are wily.
5. Alan Lin has averaged a double-double every year he’s played in the league. No other player has been as consistent for 3 years running. I’m no prophet, but me thinks he’ll be doing it again. What a sec?! He’s on my team. Sweetness.
6. Alan Lin will be in the top 5 in turnovers. No other player has been as consistent for 3 years running. What a sec?! He’s on my team. Doh.
7. We have never had a technical foul during since we started keeping track of stats. Actually, I can’t think of time we’ve had one even before stats. Let’s keep it that way. Don’t let this year be the first.
8. 8 of the players are married and another will be joining the club later this year. 6 of them are actually on the Kelly’s. Traditionally we’ve been a singles kind of league. Commitment is making a comeback.
9. The highest single game scoring output we’ve ever had in the league was when Stan Chan went all Kobe like scoring 33. He was 9 for 15 from the field, made 4 of 6 in 3 point land, shot 11 of 13 from the charity stripe and topped it off with 4 steals and a block.
10. At the league end dinner/awards, a captain has taking home one of the more dubious awards available, Most Block-able Player. And its Greg Wong who usually causes this trend.
