Red (43) vs Black (32)

Broken record time…Red is dominant.  Red is large.  Red got talent.  The Red Team showed why they have a chance to do something special this season.  They are now officially the team to beat.  Another GM was quoted with saying, Wow! They are big boys.  They hecka big…doot!  With Trey Park, Cameron Lew, Nick Ly, Jon Tropper, and Tim McMorrow, they have 5 redwood trees that stand about 6 feet.    After ending their endorsement deal with Tiger Woods, Gatorade is looking for the next transcendent star.   Coach Ethan Chan may be that next guy with getting his team on track for the playoffs.  He may be a shoo in for coach of the year.  There was a myriad of questions when coach Chan called a questionable timeout with a sizeable lead.  The commissioner immediately voiced his disapproval but decided not levy any fines for the first offense.  Ethan Chan was contrite after the game and offered an apology.  In a statement he explained there was no showy intention motivating the timeout but he did want to try out a new chant he created.

The Black team was outmatched in the interior losing the points in the paint battle 20 to12.  Everyone on the Red Team scored except for Raymond Poon and Cameron Lew to illustrate their balanced attack.  Trey Park, playing in his first game, scored nine points and had eight rebounds.  John Tropper and Sylvester Chiu added eight and nine points, respectively.   In the first half it was evident that the Red Team was aggressive getting into the bonus with 4:08 remaining in the first half.  Trey Park showed off his handles and is the point- center for the Red Team.  In the first half, he took a defensive rebound and took it coast to coast drawing a foul trying to convert a layup.  Sylvester Chiu had a great play at the end of the first half by adding a jumper with 7 seconds to go in the first half.

In the second half, it was more of the same.  The Red Team dominated the painted area.  They led the whole second half.  The black Team tried furiously for a comeback but it was not to be.  In the loss, Alan Lin had 15 points and hauled down 14 rebounds.  He could not do it alone.  No other teammate could keep pace and their next highest scorer was Colman Chung with 6 points.  The Red Team won the battle on the glass as well taking a 33-25 edge.

Notes:  Red Team will face Green Team next week in a 1st place vs 3rd place battle.  This event is already sold out at Cambridge Area in San Francisco but scalpers are selling this game for two times face value.

            Purple (49) vs. White (47)

This was one of the most bizarre games of the season.  It was ugly. Not as ugly as Jay McGwire’s cash out tell all book about his big bro but close.  There were so many gifts packaged as missed free throws, bad fouls, mistimed timeouts, and too many guys on the court it was almost unwatchable.    Timmoney Ng had a good first half with a runner and two freethrows.  Khanh Nguyen (6’2”) also had a solid first half with two putbacks of his own.

The second half, the White Team seemingly had control of the game.  They were up four points but Armondo “Style” Perez kept them in it with a series of conversions.  Greg had the block of the day (6:40 2nd half) on Jason Buqeileh, sending his ball into the upper deck.  He then had the play of the day throwing a nice alley to Armondo Perez.  Clauren Wong (4 pts, 3 rebs) answered with a floater of his own.  Entering crunch time, both teams were jockeying for the lead.

Here is how it ended in the final 2 and a half minutes:

Timmoney Ng scores a three

Greg Wong fouled and sinks both free throws

JJ He fouls Greg, Greg misses front end of 1-1

Khan is fouled, misses front end of 1-1

Timmoney is fouled, misses front end of 1-1

Timmoney steals the ball, is fouled, missed front end 1-1

Purple scores a layup with 18.6 to go, but is nullified with a timeout from the bench

Timmoney steals the ball, makes first free throw, misses second

Kahn Nguyen rebounds, misses both free throws

JJ He rebounds, makes first, and misses second free throw

Armondo Perez hits buzzer beater three point to send into OT

In OT:

James Lee scores a layup along left baseline

JJ He scores converts layup and gets fouled, makes the free throw

Hans Monsanto converts a layup

Greg fouled and sinks both free throws

White Team technical foul with 6 players on the court

James Makes another layup and free throw to tie the game at 47-47

Greg Wong rebounds and draws a block on Timmoney Ng, sinks both free throws with 1 second left on the clock.  Hits them both to win the game.

Even when the buzzer sounded, the White Team had six men on the court.  After the carnage, Greg Wong finished with 17 points and 13 rebounds.  Armondo Perez finished with 13 points and 5 rebounds.  The White Team was led by Timmoney Ng with 12 points and 4 rebounds.  With all the missed layups, too many players on the court, and timeouts during potential game winning conversions, and last second fouls, this game had it all…drama, intrigue, and just plain UGLY.

            Green (53) vs Turquoise (49)

The Green Team could not sleep after surrendering a lead in last week’s game to the Black Team.  The veterans looked for redemption this week against the Turquoise Team. The game was close the whole game until the end of the 2nd half when the Green Team eventually pulled away.  As part of the GO GREEN initiative, the team brought water bottles and Gatorade bottles to the game only to be recycled later.  Al Gore was interviewed at the game and explained that he did in fact, “invent the internet and also recycling.”  The Turquoise Team was led by Jon Lee with 11 points but took 14 shots to get there.  Raymond Loi, resident shooter, could not get on track shooting 3/12 but did chip in with 12 rebounds.  The Turquoise team had a cold shooting night shooting 36 percent (21/58) for the night.  In comparison the Green Team shot 58 percent (19/33).  The Turquoise Team got 25 more shots up that night and almost pulled off a win despite the cold shooting night.   In the second half, the Green Team tightened the defensive and converted on two turnovers.  Ryan Susanto ended with 25 points and 9 rebounds while Jeff Chan and Josh Tobin had 9 and 7.   Both teams have a must win next week.
