White 0- 3
As a coach, in a sweat, you start searching for signs
in midseason: looking for players to improve, looking
for teamwork to improve, and looking for players to
find their comfort zone. It’s like looking for the
rest stop coming back from vacation in which you just
drank a gallon of milk. This week has been that
kind of search for coaches. Who stepped up? Lets
take a look…
Winner: Red 51 Gray 48
The undefeated red team, showed why they are the
biggest bully on the block. They did their best
impression of Deebo (Tommy Lister) in the movie
Friday. Last week, I described Greg Wong as a crazed
merciless beast, but the red team, as a whole, are all
mini Deebos. Chris Huy, John Acosta, Greg Wong and
Jeff Chan all work hard down low with full energy on
the blocks getting rebounds and fighting for position
down low.
Neil Wong, did damage down low, scoring with a variety
of moves. Wong finished with a double-double (18 pts,
10 rbs). Matt Hedges helped out finishing with ten
points. The game came down to the last few plays, but
the red team kept the lead with Greg Wong’s timely
offensive rebound after a missed free-throw.
Next week, there are going to be bodies hitting the
floor. There is a collision course next week, when the
toughest rebounding teams (Red and Green) go at it
next week. Bully ball at its best. Who will be left
standing there without their lunch money?
Notes: Coleman Chung (4 pts , 2/3) came back from an
ankle injury suffered in the first game of the
season…Gray Team went 0-7 downtown…Red team attempted
25 free throws…Next week, best 2 rebounding teams go
head to head (green and red)…Tip off at 9:00 P.M. pst)
Winner :Green 48 Loser: Black 20
Basketball is a game of match ups. Can one person
make the difference between winning and losing? Yes,
think…Steve Nash for the Suns, Baron Davis for the
Warriors, Stephan Urkel for Family Matters in that
3on3 tournament? What an episode…Larry Johnson what
an actor. The green team came out guns blazing,
without Erik Chan in the lineup. They were clicking
on all cylinders and for the first time in CEBC
friendship league history had every single person on
their roster score. For the second week in a row, the
“green curtain” blanketed the offense and held the
opposing team to 6/34 shooting or 17.65 percent
shooting from the field. This is the second week
where the opposing team has been stifled by this
defensive juggernaut and been held to 17 percent
shooting from the field. The other team, the victim
of an offensive Jugger“not”, (yes, had to fit that in
there) was in dire need for any kind of offense. It
became obvious that they needed a floor general, spot
usually held by Erik Chan. The black team’s Al
Harrington, Anthony Pineda, was tops in rebounding was
held to 2/4 from the field and only 7 rebounds. The
Green team out rebounded their opponents 42 to 23.
Armondo Perez, a scoring leader, also had a sub par
shooting night going 3/11 overall. The previously
unbeaten black team, will have lick their wounds and
come back next week to remain in the hunt for CEBC
friendship league championship glory.
Winner: Blue 50 Loser: White 44
Oden/Durant sweepstakes?…this was the game that was
for pure and utter friendship. The two winless teams
competed for their first win of the season.
Ironically, this game was the most exciting of the
three. Alan Lin took the rebounding league
midseason, and finished with 15 points and 20
rebounds. Fantasy owners were glad they drafted Alan
Lin early. Darryl Greene, again, posted numbers that
filled the stat sheet (10 pts, 11 reb, 5 ast, 3 stls).
Both made their argument to be picked over Greg Wong
as the number one overall CEBC friendship league
fantasy basketball player for next season.
Ex-teammates, Brian Chew and Jeff Hua guarded each
other, in what was an epic battle between the gimpy
and the aged. I thought the game was out of reach,
until the white team made a huge push. Darryl, Adam,
and Jeff Hua made consecutive shots down the stretch
and capitalized on a Brian Chew turnover. In the end,
the gray team held on to win due to Alan Lin suddenly
becoming accurate from the charity stripe.
(Notes: Most confusing quote/moment of the day: Coach
of the gray team Brian Chew shouted out on defense, “I
got tights.” His team, looked at each other confused,
because and was not sure if he was referring to his
own tights that he was donning or if he was going to
guard Paolo Mendoza, who was also wearing tights.
Collectively, Cornerstone team, had an improved
shooting night going 10/33 (30.33 %) from the field.
This pushes their totals to 27/99 overall or 27.27%
shooting.)
Midseason questions bring midseason answers. I
learned that there a lot of questions that remain...
but learned that other sources parallel what the
Gospels describe as a man named Jesus…learned that
other sources corroborates events depicted in the
Bible.
