Week 6 Recap
Guess who’s back…that’s right…it’s me writing this week’s recap filling in the big shoes of Ryan’s blog since he wasn’t able to be there this week to watch the games. I definitely don’t have the creative writing skills of Brian or Ryan but I’ll try my best…On to the games! (although I don’t have the stats in front of me)
Gray 55 White 33
Let’s see…this game was like butter…because gray has been on a roll the past few weeks. Neil was knocking down outside jumpers and getting to the hoop with ease. Jack was playing his usual stifling defense and being a pest to almost anyone he was guarding. Matt is the new Brian Cardinal “the Janitor” of the friendship league, hustling for every loose ball and showing some great offensive moves. Throw in a couple Calvin and Daniel jumpers and Colman drives to the bucket and you’ve got a comfortable win for team white. This has been a great formula for them the past few weeks with this grizzled veteran team from PG&E. Of course, the weak link has been Peter who is trying to re-live is younger years and hoisting up 35-foot 3 pointers but I don’t think he ever made those kind of shots 20 years ago.
Gray is in the championship game next week to face green which should be a great game as gray is the only team to beat green this year.
White hasn’t won a game yet but I will give them the most inspirational team award. Of course, any team with Octavio leading it would be inspired to play well anyways. Whether his team is down by 1 or 20 points, he’s still a constant source of encouragement to the team and other players. Continuing their strong play from last week where team green barely beat them, Kevin had his usual all-around stellar play and Hubert was a load to handle down in the post. Darryl busted out that trademark smile and made uncanny Spiderman-like moves to the bucket. But the breakout game belonged to Gu Xian who was a mini-force to be reckon with…He hit a couple jumpers, grabbed a few rebounds, and played with some fire! Not bad for someone still learning the game and playing for the first time in a more competitive atmosphere. Can someone say most improved player?
Green 65 Black 40
Team green is on a mission this year. After “rhymes with bob” last year predicted a winless season (and they won 2 games), this year was going to be a turn-around season but no one thought it was going to be this good. Sherman’s scoring is down this year but his shots aren’t so the Kobe-like attitude is still there. But the biggest differences this year are definitely Norm and JC. Norm mentioned to me once casually that it appears I don’t like to hustle so he’s had to step-up his game to compensate for my apparent lack of effort. I guess I should continue playing lacksidasical so Norm will need continue to play at a high-level. JC is definitely this year’s Chairman of the Boards, averaging 14+ rebounds a game. Maybe this is because it’s a contract year for him with a baby coming soon…
Team black is probably one the friendliest teams to play against but don’t let that fool you into a thinking they aren’t a good team. With Eugene “Bobby Knight” Tse, yelling at you, you better respond and start playing well. I think Eugene just likes to yell, probably gets it from working with kids all the time. Without their leading scorer Armando this game, it was hard for Erik Chan to continue carrying the team on his back (I’m surprised he hasn’t had back spasms yet…). Oz didn’t play so it meant a couple less Sportscenter highlights showing Oz purposely throwing the basketball into people’s hands or elbows.
Blue 50 Red 35
I didn’t see the first half but here is what I think happened:
20:00 Greg and Jon Yee start the game
19:58 Jon Yee takes the first jumper of the game and misses
19:35 Greg makes the first bucket of the game
19:34-11:17 Greg continues to score the next 10 points of the game
10:34 Greg checks out of the game
10:33-10:31 Team Red scores the next 6 points of the game
10:30 Greg checks back into the game
10:29- 0:00 Greg makes the next 12 points of the game
The rest of the game can be summarized by some inspirational play by Brian who probably rivaled Greg in minutes played this game. But really, it was a team effort all around with more and1’s in this game then I’ve ever seen from team blue. On the opposite end, more missed 2-footers then I’ve ever seen as well…
